Sovna Puri DipWSET
Sovna’s first steps into the wine industry began with an internship in France at a Michelin starred Relais & Chateaux property. She met a Sommelier for the first time there and was initiated into the importance of the role at a restaurant. She also had her first experience with a wine cellar there, and she attributes the experience to her seriously getting involved with wine.
She subsequently moved to London and worked with Benares, an Indian Michelin starred restaurant, as the Assistant Head Sommelier for over 2 years. During her stint there, she successfully completed the Level 3 Advanced course in wines & spirits and the wine educators training from WSET, graduating with merit.
Sovna has successfully completed the Level 4 Diploma in Wines & Spirits from the Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET), London as of April 2018. This certification makes her one of a handful of Indians who hold the qualification (One of 10 in India and among 9,902 in the world).
The Level 4 Diploma, which is WSET’s flagship 2-year course, recognizes the holder as an expert in the field of wines and spirits and is universally viewed as a stepping-stone to the Master of Wine (MW) programme, the highest wine certification in the world. Sovna is currently certified to teach WSET courses up to Level 3, which makes her one among 4 people in India.
After returning to India in 2008 and until 2015, Sovna headed tastings and training at Sula Vineyards, India’s leading producer & importer of wines and spirits, where she was also the General Manager - Marketing. At Sula, Sovna and her tastings team conducted over 10,000 wine tastings and training across India, including Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities.
Her aim in the role was to increase wine awareness, with the vision of making tastings a social norm, among wine consumers in India. In her additional role as Sula’s media spokesperson, Sovna’s efforts and background have been profiled extensively in leading newspapers & magazines in the country.
Sovna is currently working as an independent wine & spirits consultant, continuing with her mission of conducting wine & spirits tastings, training and courses across India. It’s been 13 years, and her sojourn in the Indian wine and spirit industry has only increased her love for it. She describes the journey as being extremely challenging and a great learning experience. “I have dealt with leading wine entrepreneurs, winemakers and wine marketers who have actively been involved in the changing landscape of the wine industry in India. I am very proud of the active role I played in the rapid evolution that wine consumption has seen in the country over the last decade.”
She doesn’t visualize herself in any other field, and says, “Wine has always been my passion, and this is what I always wanted to do since the time I studied wine as a subject!”
